Changes
to the Board
As is the case each year, the Berkeley Walk Community Association had its annual meeting in January to discuss the State of the Neighborhood since the last meeting the previous year. At that meeting, a new Board was elected. Since that time, Kathy Pourmehr, who had been the President last year and was to fill out her two-year term this year, resigned and it became necessary for the Board to appoint someone to fill her slot. Thereafter, the new Board members are:
President Barbara Carroll
Vice President Dennis Perkins
Treasurer Pamela Orkis
Member-at-Large Tom Walton
Member-at-Large Jeff Cooper
We would like to thank Kathy Pourmehr for all her hard work last year in running the organization. Her time and effort are very much appreciated and we'll miss her input this year. We'd like to also thank Jeff Cooper for agreeing to complete Kathy's term. We know he'll be a helpful addition to the Board.
2005 Pool Opening Party
After a tenuous start, the pool officially opened on Saturday, May 21, although the weather did not cooperate and left us with clouds and drips. However, because we know the cool temperatures and the clouds are temporary, we have scheduled the Pool Opening Party for Sunday, June 12, 1:00-4:00 p.m. We have set aside a contingent date of Sunday, June 26, in case of inclement weather on the 12 th , although we just know the 12 th will be sunny and warm (ahem!). Official invitations with details have already gone out via e-mail and reminder flyers will be placed in neighborhood mailboxes during the week prior to the party. We're looking forward to seeing a large crowd at the pool on the 12 th . Many of you will be happy to know that there will be specially organized children's games from 2:00-3:00.
Volunteers
We've been very fortunate in filling in the weekly slots for pool volunteers. Neighbors have been quick to sign up; if you'd like to offer your time for 10 minutes each night for a week, we could use a couple more people for emergency fill-in scheduling. Call anyone on the Board if you would like to be an emergency replacement for those who've already signed up.
Covenants
We've been very pleased with how few things have needed to be cited as “violations” of the covenants. Everyone is doing a “yeoman's” job in keeping their homes and surrounding properties looking well-manicured and lovely. One thing we would like to mention…we are seeing a few homes with roofs that have mildew (that ugly black stuff) all over them. We would ask that you look at your own roof and, if you see what we're referring to, call a pressure washing company and have your roof cleaned. Let's be proactive and take care of this if it applies. We're grateful for your efforts in this area.
Police Coverage
As most of you know, Gwinnett County Police Department has a policeman assigned to do extra duty for the City of Berkeley Lake. The assigned officer is Officer McClure and his number is 678/858-7184 for emergencies. Officer McClure is very familiar with our city and all of its neighborhoods. You frequently see him (as well as the Sheriff's Department) driving through our neighborhood as a security check. Per the Mayor, since school is out and he will not have to spend his time there, Officer McClure will now have more time to spend patrolling the city, especially the pool and tennis court areas which are so busy this time of year. We're glad to have him and know that, with more visibility, it helps to make us feel somewhat more secure.
Mosquito Control
Can you believe it? Berkeley Lake has a very healthy mosquito problem each summer and we are asking that each of you work at keeping the moisture down (with all this rain, you ask?) by cleaning out the trays at the bottom of flower pots and by keeping small puddles of water from sitting for long periods of time. Mosquitoes only need ½ inch of water in which to breed and they do so in 48 hours. Do what you can to keep small amounts of water from puddling anywhere around the outside of your house.
Well, neighbors, on that interesting note, we'll close this missive. I hope you will plan to bring your family to the Smoky Bones barbecue feast at the Opening Pool Party on June 12, 1-4 p.m., and we'll make it our focus to meet each and everyone of you there.
